Vili Fualaau, born on June 26, 1983, was a student of Mary Kay Letourneau in both the second and sixth grades at Shorewood Elementary. Of Samoan descent, Fualaau found himself at the center of a scandal when, at the age of 12, Letourneau, then 34, initiated a sexual relationship with him during the summer of 1996.

Controversy Against Mary Kay Letourneau

The controversy came to light on June 18, 1996, when the police discovered Letourneau with Fualaau in a car at a marina. Fualaau, pretending to sleep in the back, and Letourneau, jumping into the front seat, provided false names and misrepresented Fualaau’s age. 

Letourneau explained their presence by claiming an escape from a family argument, saying Fualaau, a family friend staying with them, witnessed the dispute and ran away upset. She left to find him.

Fualaau’s mother was called, and despite Letourneau’s misrepresentation, she suggested returning Fualaau to Letourneau.
