Born on 21 February 1970 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, to parents Peter and Carole he grew up at Wagga and Junee along with the two older siblings. He was attracted to cricket at the age of 12 and it was the only thing he liked after his mother left him and his family in 1983.
Slater comes from a family who was involved in the sport, so it was quite natural for him to play whatever game was being offered to him, at the age of 11 he was selected in New South Wales Primary School Sports Association cricket and hockey teams. He was more attracted to hockey and played for the state under-12 hockey team in 1981 and went on to be selected in the Under-13, -15, and -17 hockey teams. It was during his teenage years that he got attracted to cricket.
Starting with the domestic team New South Wales as a captain he made his international debut on 3 June 1993 v England, while playing for the Australian team he faced “nervous nineties” many times before he finally scored 100.
He was dropped off his cricket career and finally retired from Cricket in year 2004. In total, he has played 74 Test matches and 42 One Day Internationals for the Australia national cricket team.
