Mary Kay Holthus is the judge for the 8th Judicial District Court in Nevada. She started as a deputy district attorney in Clark County back in 1991. On Wednesday morning, January 3rd, 2024, during a hearing, she was brutally attacked by a criminal named Deobra Redden because she sentenced him to jail. The video of the attack spread all over social media.
Who is Deobra Redden?
Deobra Redden was involved in a serious case in Ireland back in 1993 related to the murder of Willy Hannon. He was accused of being connected to the Butlers, who assaulted and killed Hannon.
Redden faced charges for providing the Butlers with a shotgun and ammo and was accused of being an accomplice in the crime. He claimed he didn’t know about their plan to kill Hannon.
He said he borrowed the shotgun for hunting and had no idea it would be used in the murder. Additionally, he stated that he found the ammo and gave it as a gift without knowing its purpose.
The trial of Redden and the Butlers was lengthy, lasting for 65 days, and was one of the most complex cases in Irish history.
Redden was found guilty of murder and possessing the firearm without a license. He received a life sentence for murder and an additional five years for the firearm charge. The Butlers were also convicted of murder and received life sentences.
Apart from this case, Redden has a history of being in prison. In 2015, he was sentenced to at least 19 months in prison for attempted theft. He also served time in 2021 for domestic battery, according to records from the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Deobra Redden Assaulted Judge Mary Kay Hothus
Deobra Redden, aged 30 and with a criminal record, was in court before Judge Mary Kay Holthus for a charge of attempted battery causing serious harm.
Just before Mr. Redden jumped over the bench, his lawyer requested that Judge Holthus give him probation. “I understand that, but I believe it’s time for him to experience a different consequence,” Judge Holthus responded before proceeding with the sentencing. Judge Holthus added, seemingly mentioning Mr. Redden’s previous criminal record.
Assault Video
At around 11 a.m., Redden rushed towards Judge Holthus, leaping over the bench, and attacked her, as seen in a video shared with investigators from 8 News Now.
Others, along with the courtroom marshal, intervened, struggling with Redden before finally subduing him. An alarm alerted everyone to the incident.

Injuries Incurred During the Assault of Mary Kay Hothus
The injuries incurred were not that critical; Judge Mary Kay had minor injuries, and the courtroom marshal got hurt with a bleeding cut on the forehead and a shoulder injury, as reported by The Associated Press.
Therefore, the injuries would be healed in a couple of weeks and both would be able to go back to their daily lives. District Court spokeswoman Mary Ann Price praised the bravery of the judge’s team, law enforcement, and everyone who helped control the attacker.
She assured USA TODAY that the court is focused on keeping courtrooms and the courthouse safe. They’re looking into all their safety procedures and will make any needed changes to safeguard judges, the public, and their staff.
Summing Up
The physical assault of Deobra took over both Judge Mary Kay Holthus and the courtroom marshal, but we are thankful none were critically injured. Currently, their injuries are closely monitored until they heal.
